Back in the Cockpit

We arrived back home this afternoon to beautiful weather and happy dogs. It was a welcome rest to the three hours it took to wind our way from Los Angeles back to the Central Coast. Parker and I unpacked the car and, after a joyful reunion with the pups, went our separate ways- me for the laptop and he for a work call. He returned to find me cozy on the bed, laptop up and running. "Back in the cockpit already, I see!" he said, not one bit surprised. I tend to do a lot of different things in bed- pay the bills, make phone calls, write- and it is kind of my desk even though we have a really cute Ikea desk in the living room. I should make the transition to the living room soon, though- slouching or curling up all the time is going to have me back at the chiropractor sooner than later.

Oh, I can't forget to tell you all about my last morning in Redondo Beach! Let's backtrack. Parker headed downstairs for the final session of his conference while I packed up our room. On his break, he came upstairs to help me make sure we weren't leaving anything behind. We took our bags to the car, and with a goodbye smooch I was off in search of a "not Starbucks" for breakfast. (Side note: I've had a few people ask me, "Why not Starbucks?" and while I certainly admire their origins as a local chain, I always try first to support local businesses. They are often so passionate about the quality and details of not only coffee and tea but also connecting with their customers- not to mention the boost to the local economies these shops provide. I used to be a huge Starbucks fan, but I've gone local and there's no going back!)

I drove through Redondo Beach, past all the pretty oceanfront homes, and wound my way through Manhattan Beach as well. I found a place to park and started looking around for meter money when I realized that I had left my wallet in the hotel room. Oy! I drove back to the hotel, dreading the walk back up to our room (while it had an amazing view, it happened to be the second to last room furthest away from the elevator). Bribing the valet guy to let me leave the car there for just a minute, I ran upstairs, down the hallways, grabbed that pesky wallet and was soon on my way again. Walking aimlessly and determined not to use my Droid for directions, I found The Tea Exchange.

This place was wonderful. They were chatty and they even had Bavarian pretzels (!). It felt like I was sitting in a beach house, complete with a copy of the Street Art Doodle Book: Outside the Lines and local art hanging on the walls. I sketched away while waiting for my drink, people watching out of the corner of my eye (there were some great outfits today in Manhattan Beach, let me tell you!). They even had a sense of humor- a sign on the wall read, "Unattended children will be given espresso and a free puppy- they break, you buy." I was sad to leave...

...but so happy to be home now!

Joie de V: March Book of the Month

Last year, I read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and couldn't believe how quickly I tore through it. It may have been because, to my relief, I discovered that I wasn't the only one questioning life's little choices in light of the grand scheme of things. It was also comforting to realize that someone in this world just may love Italian food as much as yours truly. My conclusion: live an adventurous life, and eat the darn breadstick.

This month, I'm reading Gilbert's follow-up book Committed. I'll let you know how it goes!

The Day Puppy Made Three

One year ago today, I woke up at the crack of dawn and drove to Bakersfield for the best reason ever- to adopt a puppy (I can't really think of any other reason to drive to Bakersfield, actually...)! I had seen him on PetFinder and knew instantly that it was meant to be.

While on our puppy search closer to home, the shelters told us we'd have to schedule an interview, take a personality test to see if our traits matched with the dog, and have our home evaluated by a shelter staff member. The animal shelter in Bakersfield told me whoever showed up first with the cash to adopt him would have dibs. I was determined to get there first (did I mention I like winning?).

I was so excited to see no one else was at the shelter that morning at seven (they were still in bed, like normal people). As the clerk lead me to the kennel and opened the door, little Augustus came bounding out, much larger than I was expecting but more perfect than previously imagined! I oohed and ahhed in excitement- little Gus peed in a frenzy, all over my shoes. I didn't care! He was my pup!

A year later, he still roams the backyard like he is king of the world. He has an uncanny way of being calm and cuddly when I'm sad, and some of my favorite memories are of us sitting in the backyard together in the sunshine. I never knew I could love a dog so much!

Redondo Beach: Itinerary Day 2

This morning, I drove to Century City in search of H&M. This is the first time I've been to one of their stores since living in Munich, and I wasn't disappointed. I limited myself to just one "must-have", and it was so tricky deciding but I finally settled on a pair of linen high-waist trousers. They are perfect to wear with any tops and I plan to wear them as much as possible!

Beverly Hills: What I Did (and Who I Saw!)

Where to start, where to start! After deciding a rough idea of what I wanted to see today, I set out to Röckenwagner Bakery for a German pretzel. I wound up buying the last three they had made, then hopped back in the car and took to the Hills!

I stopped by Brighton Coffee Shop and enjoyed a delicious latte (the lady who helped me at the counter was so friendly. I'm sure she checked at least three times to make sure I was happy!), then wandered down Brighton (past Villa Blanca- it looked so pretty but it
was full to the brim with people) on my way to Sprinkles for a red velvet cupcake to save for later. Only a few doors down from Sprinkles, I stopped for a manicure. Worst manicure I've ever gotten. I could've done it myself, the result would've been at least the same, but less painful and with me keeping my money!

Heading back outside, I walked back down to Rodeo Drive and walked up and down the sidewalks among the shops at least four or five times. I stopped into Prada- I was carrying my Prada, after all- to look at the new Spring/Summer clutches. Amazing. I didn't look at one price tag and I didn't want to- I just pretended the store was my closet and was blissfully happy.

Content, I was headed back to the parking garage when I was able to check the one box on my secret agenda- celebrity sighting! Tia Carrere (most famously known as Cassandra from Wayne's World) was walking with her daughter towards Rodeo Drive.

Now super content and getting ready for dinner with my hubby. What should I do tomorrow?

Redondo Beach: Itinerary Day 1

So, while hubby is at his conference, I have the day to explore! Yesterday, we arrived in Redondo Beach and settled into our room. After walking the boardwalk and pier, we ventured to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner.

Today, I'm tackling Beverly Hills. What's on the agenda?

Röckenwagner Bakery (okay so it's not in Beverly Hills, but I need a pretzel)
Brighton Coffee Shop
TASCHEN Books
Sprinkles Cupcakes

Pictures after my adventure!

Puppy Love

I was reading an article the other day that completely intrigued me, and it had to do with the role pets now play in fashion and our lives. Prior to reading this article, I never really pictured my pups being my best accessory. I don't think I've ever spent more than twenty dollars on a collar or leash. They've never worn clothes (although I did think about dressing them up for Halloween). I want them to be well-groomed, of course, but I can't imagine styling them like a panda bear (how cute are those panda/Chow puppies, though!).

Did you know that this year was the first ever Pet Fashion Week in New York City? Or that some pet owners are now dying their pet's fur to match their own personal style du jour?

Let's be honest- if I had $1,200 to spend on Hermès, it definitely wouldn't be for the dogs!

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

Oh boy. I'll admit, after taking a look around (and by that I mean searching through French, German, and Italian Vogue's websites as well as this month's US issue) at what to wear this spring, I'm a bit nervous. It has nothing to do with the style or the pieces themselves. It's the color. Many of my friends tease me because whenever we go shopping I say begrudgingly, "I really should wear more color..." as I reach for something- anything- black. You see my problem. This going to be like The Wizard of Oz- stepping out from the world of black and white into a bright place outside my comfort zone. I'm shooting for a happy medium somewhere between the Olsen twins and Richard Simmons.

Comfort in Carbs

I've noticed a trend lately. Whenever Parker has to work late, like tonight, I crave seashell pasta with white cheddar sauce and lots of butter. This afternoon while shopping at Fresh & Easy, I grabbed a couple boxes just to have in the pantry. It's a good thing I did, because as soon as I found out my dear man was working late, out came the pasta and The Devil Wears Prada. I only slightly felt bad about scarfing down all these carbs when Nigel scolds Andy for choosing clam chowder with a bread bowl for lunch because size six is the new fourteen. Oops.

Little Brothers.

Today my little brother is twenty years old! It's hard to believe, but it's happening. All in all, I know he has grown up to be a decent guy- though I remember times growing up when I wasn't so sure that was going to be the case. Here's some things that come to mind when I think about my little bro:

Pump it Up by Elvis Costello
Unicycles
Olives on fingers
Homemade bicycle ramps
Stitches
Gumballs
Santa Baby
Aunt Virginia
Dizzy Dizzy Dinosaur
Climbing trees
Putting his pinkie toe on my blanket
Warheads candy
Kumquats

We've definitely had all kinds of sibling rivalry- but as we've gotten a bit older, he is somebody I can ask for help, someone who can make family dinners more fun, someone way taller than me (how annoying).

But he'll always be my little brother.

Variation on a Theme- Wooden Heels

One of my favorite current shoe trends are wooden clogs with a high heel. Perfect for walking, oh-so-cute, with a salute to Mother Nature, you just can't go wrong! As fashion is coming around full circle once more, vintage finds are holding their own with more current clog styles.

I have two pair of Sven clogs- one of them is number 3 to the right, which I actually designed for myself during the Job of the Shoes and Sven is now displaying on their website!- and the only problem I find with them is deciding which ones I want to wear more.

Can you spot which of these clogs are vintage and which are new?

1. Dekalb Clog Sandal ($345) by Rachel Comey
2. Vintage Shoe with Wooden Heel ($40) from Aiseirigh
3. Leaf Punch High Heel Clog in Taupe ($225) by Sven
4. Vintage 40s T-Strap Clog ($300) from HoneycombVintage
5. T-Strap Clog in Honey ($245) from No.6 Store
6. Bohemian Leather Clogs ($44) from CraftyCrowVintage

I May Not Have the Smartest Pups on the Planet...

...but they are the cutest and bring me never-ending glee!

So the funniest thing happened, maybe ever. I let the dogs in because it's pouring rain outside. I'm in the living room reading this month's issue of Allure when I hear the trash can fall over in the kitchen. Gus and I peer around the corner to find Roscoe unable to enjoy his spoils... because the trash can lid was stuck on his head.

It must be the Chow in him.

(Is it bad that I stared, laughed for a minute, and took a picture before helping the poor boy out?)

Yay. Blerg. I Don't Know.

On particularly ill-fated mornings, I wake up feeling like Liz Lemon. (If you don't know who that is, call me and I will let you borrow 30 Rock immediately.) She has this inner fabulous self, I'm sure, but it's usually hidden behind Scrunchies (bad hair day), under over-sized sweats (not exactly feeling svelte- maybe I should go for a run), and somewhere between the first and third doughnut (oh, what's the point). She makes social faux pas and consequently finds solace in soft pretzels- are you seeing the connection? It's a good thing that Mr. Parker loves me just as I am and encourages me to put my best foot forward and make the best of each day, otherwise it would be ridiculously easy to make Liz Lemon days a daily occurrence.

It feels good to finally collapse in bed tonight. I've started a new job, and I'm really enjoying it. I also applied for an events management internship with Nike at their Santa Barbara office so it would be amazing if that worked out. During the Job of the Shoes, I was working sixty hours some weeks and now it's going down to less than twenty at less pay. I don't have anything else to do occupy my time right now while Mr. Parker is working so much, so in an attempt to offset my stir-craziness I'm going to have to either find some hobbies or another job. Maybe both.

Highlight of the Week: last Saturday, I witnessed something incredible. My first cousin (ever) was born. There was so much happening at the time- helping Verissa through her contractions as much as I could by holding her head up and keeping her forehead cool, feeling different emotions as I watched Tabitha and my grandma's face- a combination of elation and concern- and suppressing the urge to sing along to Mamma Mia, which was playing on the TV. When Bella was born, there was hugging and kissing and exclamations, but I couldn't get over how one minute she wasn't born, and the next minute there she was! In any case, she was perfectly beautiful and the whole thing was just...well, you know...amazing.

Terry McConnell at the Lucmann Gallery

As many of you know, Coffee & Company is my go-to place for my daily caffeine fix. My friend Candice has done amazing things for this place in the year she has owned it- the Lucmann Gallery is one of those things. Each month she features a local artist's work; this month, Terry McConnell's original paintings, photography, art prints, and even a comic series line the walls and they are magnificent. If you're in the area this month, I encourage you to stop by and soak it all in.

Bam!

Lately, I've had some encouragement (meaning: poking, prodding, etc) to turn these musings into a "real" blog featuring my current music, movie, food and fashion favorites. I'm going to try, but sometimes I wonder if people even read this old thing. Thus, the blog facelift. A new template for a new year, and a new year for new pursuits!

So far I've only failed one of my New Year's resolutions and that is to attempt a new culinary feat made entirely from scratch. This means I'll have to do two in February to catch up. This month I read My Life in France by Julia Child, so I should have plenty of inspiration! I really enjoyed this book for a few reasons: firstly, it brought a smile to my face to read about how much that girl loved butter (you're not the first one, Paula Deen). Secondly, I was really struck by how much time they spent around the table; a three hour dinner was not uncommon. How great is that? It's a completely different idea to someone like me who is used to dinners being about thirty minutes, tops (and that's probably including prep time).

So, any ideas for what I should make this month?

Chicago

This last Thursday through early Monday morning, my mom and I were able to fly to Chicago for Grandma Cleo's funeral. It was quite a change for this California girl to hear the pilot say, "We're on our final descent into Chicago, where the temperature is currently seventeen degrees." As Mom and I met up with Uncle Rob and collected our suitcases from baggage claim at Midway, I promptly changed from sandals into my cute boots I bought from work, pulled my orange wool EMU hat snug as far down on my face as possible and stepped bravely out the door. The bravery quickly hopped on the next plane back to California as I realized that this was no joke! The three of us stood on the sidewalk waiting for my grandparents, and I jumped up and down to keep warm as they pulled up to the curb. I slid into the back seat and exclaimed, "I didn't know God allowed it to be this cold!" My grandparents loved that line and fit it into countless conversations over the weekend. I don't mind, though- I'm funny, what can I say...
It was nice seeing extended family and celebrating Grandma Cleo's life. Everyone had good words and it was nice to hear stories about her that I hadn't heard before. We stopped by her home after the funeral and went inside for one last time. To our surprise, there were piles of photo albums and miscellaneous pictures scattered in two of the otherwise empty rooms. I found an album with lots of my baby pictures (naked in a bowl- no, you can't see it), and pictures of my mom when she was little- it was like finding lost treasure to me, especially when I know Grandma Cleo loved all those photos (she is is in the center of the photo below, taken in 1934.)

Saturday night, Mom and I stayed at the Raffaello Hotel and it was fantastic. We had an extended check-out so we were able to have the room until four the next afternoon. We spent the first hour or so exploring the hotel a bit, then settled in watching HGTV and planning the next day. After a really wonderful night's sleep, I went down to the fitness center and ran a fast mile on the treadmill while watching the snow fall around Chicago's pretty buildings. A little while later, we ventured out into the snow (after chatting with the most hilarious Russian doorman) to the Cheesecake Factory and had fun people-watching while devouring the most delicious piece of cheesecake I've ever eaten. We shopped and enjoyed the city, and before we knew it- poof!- hours had flown by and it was time to head back to California.

We waved goodbye to Chicago and hello to Santa Barbara without looking back. We're such California girls.

Whirlwind

This year is doing nowhere near what I planned it would. We're nine days in and already it's a flurry of unexpected activity.

Today is our first anniversary. We spent a little time talking about that day a year ago and how it's gone so fast yet at times it feels like we've been married forever. It's a really nice feeling. He left this afternoon for a two-week training and I miss him. He kissed me and told me to keep a stiff upper lip, so now I'm looking on the bright side and plan on enjoying having the bed all to myself this week.

It's a bittersweet feeling to be celebrating our life together while this week my family has experienced a loss. My Grandma Cleo (my mom's paternal grandmother) passed away yesterday. She was ninety years old this last March, and for her birthday my mom, sisters, uncle, grandparents and I went to Illinois to surprise her. I won't forget the look on her face as we all filed into her room- priceless! I showed her pictures of Parker and Gus and listened to her talk to everyone as we visited. She was a wonderful woman.

My mom and I are flying to Chicago this weekend for her funeral. I had originally taken the days off this weekend to go visit Parker in Sacramento, but I am thankful to have this time to
go be with my family. We're staying in a hotel with Grandpa, Grandma, and the rest of the family in Manteno for Thursday and Friday night, but for our last night in Chicago I booked my mom and I a room at the Raffaello Hotel and Sunday I plan on walking around a little bit and maybe find a nice restaurant, cold weather be darned.

Today I won my first real luxury handbag steal on eBay. I won't tell you how much it was- it's still more than I'm willing to admit- but it is SO cute and it is- gasp!- Prada. Mmm mmm good.

Technology!

Today was a day of technology! To celebrate our impending anniversary, we decided to really leave the nest and- dun dun dun!- start our own family plan on Verizon. We splurged on two Droids and they are awesome!
Before Christmas, I had bought two other technological wonders for my man, knowing how much he loves relaxing and listening to music on his days off: the Livio Internet Radio which features

Pandora and NPR, and an iHome clock radio.

In separate news, I bought a pair of Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent sandals and they are so cute!

Parker out.

Resolutions In No Particular Order

  1. Attempt one new culinary feat each month that must be made from scratch
  2. Go through the entire 90 days of P90X at least once
  3. Go running for a mile or longer at least three times a week
  4. Travel outside of California on a vacation with Parker (the goal right now is New York City)
  5. Spend time playing the piano at least once a week
  6. Read one new book a month
  7. Become proficient in German so I can have another reason to go back and visit in 2012
I have a feeling it's going to be a great year! Welcome 2011!

Shocking Plot Twist of the Year

Well, it's certainly been a while since I've last written. I've been so busy at work that by the time I arrive back at Casa de Parker, all I want to do is snuggle with the pups and just relax. Right now my man and I have completely different schedules, so we don't usually see each other until he gets home, by which time I am usually asleep so I can look fresh and alert in San Luis Obispo at 6:30 the next morning!
We've been helping each other in the pursuit of fitness by going on a mile run every other day, and it's been nice. I don't feel as stressed and it's nice to get out in the crisp winter air together. You may be surprised that I'm running at all, and I completely agree with you as I myself am more than a little shocked at this development in the life of Veralynn. You see, I hate running. Hate. But recently my friend and co-worker Lacey asked me to go on a run with her, and unfortunately for her I agreed. We decided to go running at Pismo Beach, on the sand, for two miles. In my mind, I was freaking out- on the outside, I was like, "Yeah, no biggie..." As a person who never runs, I started out pretty nicely, keeping up with Lacey as we ran along the ocean. By about 0.8 miles I was blubbering like baby and started lagging behind. Lacey had her headphones in, and by the time she noticed I wasn't next to her anymore, I was actually quite a ways back, huffing and puffing. Lacey (who's in the Army and is all business when it comes to working out) shouted, "Come on! You're killing me- stop being a little baby [note: she didn't say baby] and just do it!" And even though I took longer than she did to finish the two miles, I did finish. I felt great afterwards, and decided that maybe this wasn't so bad after all. Plus, I've finally found a shoe that doesn't hurt my feet and allows them to feel natural and free just as nature intended.
In other news: Grandpa John, Grandma Joyce, and Uncle Rob came out from Nashville for Christmas and I loved having them here, even if I didn't get to see them as much as I would've liked. They indulged in many a California delicacy- Del Taco, Klondike's Pizza, Coffee & Company and Chef Rick's- and enjoyed visiting with their favorite oldest granddaughter/niece. Grandpa enjoyed making fun of my Vibrams, and everyone got to meet my dear pups!
I would have to say the highlight of the Christmas holiday was giving my little sisters their first pair of UGG boots. Since the beginning of fall, all they've talked about is boots and I decided that it would be the perfect gift since I work for a company who just happens to sell the boots they love! I could hardly wait to see their faces- and neither they nor I were disappointed. Every day since Christmas that I've seen them, they've had those boots on. They're just like their big sister- they love shoes.
Last but not least, I bought myself a Kindle. I have to say, it's pretty much the essence of me- literary, compact, and lightweight (ha). I splurged a little bit on a Kate Spade cover, which is just the icing on the cake.
I'll write more soon- gotta post those New Year's Resolutions!

Dior and Great Danes

This photo makes me so happy. If I had my way, this is how I would love to look every day- polished, high heels, and hair done...with two giant dogs on either side! Of course that's not how it is, but at the very least I'm glad Vogue doesn't think that small breeds are the only pooches that go hand in hand with upscale living.
...Did I really just say "upscale living"? Yes, I did.

This blog is dedicated to Fritz, the Black Lab who we found running in the streets of Orcutt and who was welcomed by all in our home for a wonderful five days. Gus loved him, as did we all! Diet? What Diet?

You know how nutritionists sometimes suggest self-evaluation of diet and general levels of fitness to hopefully encourage us to pursue a more healthful way of living? ...Me neither. But tonight while Mr. Parker and I were sitting on the couch watching episodes of 30 Rock (onto a great start already, right?), I realized what I've had to eat today: a pumpkin scone, a cheeseburger, an ice cream sandwich, two (little) chocolate chip cookies, two miniature soft pretzels, and a slice of Parker's pepperoni pizza. I know!

I'm only being brutally honest about this because I'm hoping that posting this will push me off the couch and into the gym! And maybe consider the fact that the closest thing to a fruit or vegetable I consumed today was the word "pumpkin" in my pumpkin scone. This is depressing.

Birkenstock Birth Control Myth Debunked

That's right- the job curse has been subdued again! I'm working for Roxanne's Birkenstock in San Luis Obispo- actually their website, ShoeSurfing.com- which has everything from Ugg Boots to Minnetonka Moccasins, from Simple Shoes to, you guessed it- Birkenstocks. Birks and I go way back, known from an early age as "those weird-looking hippie sandals Mom wears and therefore I will never set foot in". (My grandpa showed me a comic strip once with a patient asking a doctor for a non-invasive form of birth control- the doctor said, "Here- try these" and handed her a pair of Birkenstock sandals!) Upon starting this job, however, I've found that they have come a long way and maybe someday will consider buying a pair. I can't bring myself to do it just yet...

I did buy a pair of celebratory shoes with my first paycheck, though! (You know I couldn't resist.) They are made by Simple and not only are they organic, they're 100% vegan with no animal products or byproducts.
PETA would be proud. They are so comfortable!

Other news from the home front: Gus-Gus graduated from his first level of obedience training today. I was so proud of him- he is growing up so fast. Next thing you know it will be time for his 1st birthday party! Haha...you think I'm joking. I don't think you understand how much I love this dog!

Well, that's it for now. I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies for Mr. Parker and his co-workers. Plus I'll take just about any excuse to see my man. Thank goodness it's his Friday, because honestly I miss him so much! You'd think he'd be old hat nine months into this marriage business, but I can't get enough of him.

Cherry Pie: A Success Story

I was so excited to make a cherry pie yesterday. First of all, I have never made one. Secondly, last time I made a pie (banana creme) I was very disappointed with the crust and I was ready to give it another go. Thirdly, it was Bill's (a wonderfully kvetchy old regular at Coffee & Company) birthday and cherry pie is his favorite, so I had a good excuse.
The pain-in-the-tush of rolling out the dough was well worth the end result: a flaky, buttery, lattice crust filled with a sweet cherry filling that was set just right. A scoop of vanilla ice cream and- voilĂ !- a perfect birthday treat for friends to share.

Subject Matter

Lately I've been at a loss for good subjects to blog about. Topics to get my audience (how many of there are you, I wonder?) thinking, and inspire kindness through learning how to be a kind person. I am in no way close to being the person that I'd like to be, and I am always thankful to know that there are plenty of opportunities to be a joy in someone's life and "practice makes perfect"!

This can be quite challenging, especially since working at the SeaCrest Resort- not that the SeaCrest in and of itself is the problem, but rather the constant interaction with generally happy but also sad, grumpy, angry, argumentative, and sometimes flat-out rude people. I was commiserating with my co-worker Alyssa today about how you can walk into work with the best intentions, but after a few angry guests it's all you can to not to answer the phone droning, "Thanks for calling the SeaCrest, whatdya want..." It's definitely a constant discipline that I wasn't anticipating at this job and that I don't always enjoy...but those are often the disciplines we need to incorporate into our lives the most, true?

The whole reason I'm contemplating this is because of an email I received a couple days ago. It was from FlyLady, a website devoted to help people everywhere find a method and set a pattern for keeping their homes in order. This email didn't strike me because it had a magical formula for folding laundry; it caught my eye because it was titled "20 Good Karma Notes from the Dalai Lama." I don't believe in karma, but I do think that these notes are food for thought and starting tomorrow, I'll blog about each one individually and how they apply in my own life. I hope you're encouraged to take a fresh look at your own life and circulate kindness in your realm of friends and family.

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three R's:
- Respect for self,
- Respect for others and
- Responsibility for all your actions.
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great relationship.
7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
19. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.
20. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

June's Almost Over...?

Yes, this title is fairly self-explanatory. I'm not sure why or how this year is going by so quickly, but it definitely is. I have this little mental calendar that keeps track of every big event and it's amazing how many of the things on there have already passed! It included getting married, the addition of a puppy, and three new babies being born that are close to my heart (Alice, Zaiden, and Lacie- all born now!).
I think part of this has to do with me finding full-time work, which is awesome...and time-consuming. I find it really hard to relax with work looming over in the background. But the nice thing about hotel work is that while summer hours abound and are plentiful, as soon as fall and winter come around things will calm down a lot. Hopefully I'll still have work, but not so many hours and definitely not sold out all the time. It will be nice!
Well, off to snuggle with my husband and enjoy the night before work tomorrow- it's Car Show weekend and Pismo Beach is gonna be hoppin'!

Quote of the Day

Me, after watching The Real Housewives of New York City: "I want to be a big, loud, Jewish family."
Parker: "Want to be?...Babe. C'mon."

From Froggy to Fabulous

This morning Mr. Wonderful and I went to Jack's (for those of you who aren't familiar with Santa Maria, Jack's is a local fave that caught fire and was rebuilt, remodeled, and reopened recently). We went about a month ago as well and weren't too impressed, but thought we'd give it another try. Breakfast confirmed our initial reaction but we split ways for the afternoon- he went to Rangemasters, and I indulged in some much-needed Coffee & Company (I've been working so much it really is an indulgence nowadays instead of a daily fix- sad). Well, a friend from our Bible study, Ashley, came into the coffee shop and we talked about how everyone was getting together at their place tonight instead of the usual Shaw hangout. I was all ready to go but as I got home this afternoon, that Jack's wasn't feeling so good after all. I got bored watching The Real Housewives of NYC so I decided to have a spa night. Results: hair dyed, nails done, and skin prepped for summer (read: wax hurts). But it's worth it to feel nice for summer!

Gross

That is how I feel right now. Colds are disgusting! Hats off to a conscientious guest, though- he got upset that I had to work yesterday while sick, wanted to talk to a manager, and insisted that I not come back until better. That was nice of him.

One Year Ago Today

A special someone came into my life. Someone who, at first glance, seemed too cool for me. Little did I know how close we'd become! My spontaneous travel buddy, my fellow music lover, unbiased to all who wanted to hang out with us...and German-born.
That's right, I'm talking about my car. One year, over 22,000 miles and counting. I'm thankful for this car! (Of course, I realize this mostly when I have to drive Parker's car- it's just not the same...) I'm thankful that God would let me be able to give rides, visit new places, and get to work each day...stylishly at that!

My Baby!

Gus-Gus is almost six months old and I couldn't be more in love with his litte face. Each day he greets me at the door with a wagging tail and I love cuddling with him at the end of the day. He is getting to be very big now (at five months he is almost fourty pounds!) and he loves eating chicken, apples, bananas, or pretty much anything we set in front of him. He loves the dog park, and just had his first salon experience yesterday at Petsmart. We've taught him how to sit, stay, lie down, and come when called...although I got another phone call today from Petsmart saying the ladies in the grooming salon told her they thought I should be aware of the training classes they offer.
What're you trying to say, lady? My little pup is perfect. Well, as close as one adorable fuzzball can get.

V's Quote of the Day

It's better to do business with an experienced stranger than a person you know who has no idea what they're doing. I've learned this lesson the hard way.

The Musings of a Late-Night Hotel Employee

The check-ins have arrived. The phone isn't ringing. Everything is in its place. Can it really be this quiet in the lobby?
Now in the middle of my second month working at a happenin' Pismo Beach hotel, these are the thoughts that cross my mind towards the end of my shift. Mr. What's-Happening (as Chef Rick calls my husband) maintains that I took a reservation call in my sleep. And the thing is, I know he's right! Especially in my first month, I would have dreams almost every night practicing reservations or using the computer system. It really isn't fair that my job should poke its head into what should be the most peaceful and relaxing parts of my day...bah humbug.

You Think You've Got a Plan...Then Life Happens

It's amazing to me how quickly this year has gone, and the amount of things that have happened. Jobs (or lack of them at some points...Morgan was right saying I have a job curse), surprise travel, and new Parker family additions have changed 2010 for the better. From the last time I wrote, I stopped working as a gymnastics coach and found a job at the front desk of the SeaCrest Resort in Pismo Beach. It's full-time and with nice pay and benefits after 90 days and I love working in Pismo!
In March, I got to go to Nashville and Chicago to spend time with my family there and surprise my great-grandma Cleo for her 90th birthday. That was really fun- plus, my mom and sisters got to go too, even though they arrived in Chicago separately and didn't stay as long (however, the girls and I spent lots of time taking pictures, swimming, and spending time together so even though we were in Illinois for a different reason it turned out to be a great sister get-together). It was hard leaving my husband for even a week (I honestly didn't think it would be so hard but I missed him like crazy) but I think surprising Grandma Cleo and seeing her made up for the time spent apart from Parker.
The day before I left for Nashville something small but very important entered the new branch of the Parker family. What has four legs, a tail, and the cutest little face ever? Augustus, or Gus-Gus, our new German Shepherd mix puppy. Parker and I had originally planned to get a puppy April 1st but when I saw him on Petfinder.com I knew he was supposed to be in our family and asked Parker if we could get him right away so that no one else could have him...and to my surprise, he said yes! I was so excited I could barely wait until the day came when I could go pick him up from the animal shelter in Shafter (near Bakersfield). Once Gus-Gus entered the picture, my car never smelled the same again-but that doesn't matter because I love Gus-Gus as much as humanly possible and then some. I know Parker loves him too, and I'm so glad to have this little guy as part of our family. He is three or four months old (the animal shelter didn't know his exact date of birth) and is just starting the teething process, so he's always trying to chomp on any exposed limbs, which is not fun but it's nice to know it's not out of aggression. He's so good on his walks and he's learned some basic training commands already. He's definitely a momma's boy and I spoil him but only because he deserves it. :) He loves Parker too and always is so excited to run and play with him when he gets home from work. I can't imagine any other puppy in our little family.
Ah, life is good.
